I have got the similar problem. My HP Envy dv6 had windows 8 originally, which I updated to windows 8.1. After a few weeks it started working extremely slow and it could not be shout down. It used to take forever to shut down. Therefore, I decided to recover with the given Windows 8 recovery DVDs. But, after 2.5 hrs of the process, where recovery preparation was completed and recovery implementation was going on, it displayed the message-"The recovery attempt has failed. Select one of the following buttons:". The buttons were- 1) Save Log, 2) Details, 3) Retry. I had no choice but other than to proceed with retry, which re-initiated the whole process all over again. And after 2.5 hrs, it came to the same point displaying the same message. Though, I try to shutdown forcefully, by pressing and holding power button, when I start, it takes me to the same screen with the same message. Thus, now, I can neither start my laptop normal way, nor I can recover. I am stuck. I have done this 5 times, and everytime it gets stuck at the same window.
