Commentary
The HP Assistant is a good bit of code -- it is also massively complex, does a BUNCH of different jobs, and keeps track of a variety of setups on your computer. Downloading and installing updates works -- and then doesn't. The most common fix is to uninstall the HPSA program, reboot, and install a new copy. If you want to know why it failed, you might find the answer deep in the Event Viewer -- whether the answer is easy to understand or not could be another issue.
You have to option to download and install the Updates and software found in your computer's support webpages. This is a tried and true method that works even when the HP Support Assistant is having a bad day.
You have the option to circumvent the recommended procedures (manual install from HP support site, for example) and use whatever tool you like to download and install updates, patches, and software on your computer from whatever source you desire.
You might want to have recent backups completed and ready regardless of which method used.
